Have you ever accepted a job offer and quickly realized you’d made a mistake?

If this has happened to you, you are not alone, it happens to a lot of people. Even if you have extensive work experience, you can still make a decision based on what you thought was a good match only to find after a short time the job just is not what you thought it would be.

If you find yourself in a job that’s not right for you, accept the situation, make the most of it, learn from it and go forward.

Don’t jump to conclusions, however. It can take some time to develop an understanding of the culture of your new employer, for example.

If, after basing your decision on realistic expectations, you still feel miserable with your decision, make a plan to start job searching.

Here’s the good news: A bad job decision is not irreversible. You can change jobs if you are unhappy.

Be prepared to face questions about your current length of employment. If there was a genuine misunderstanding between you and your current employer about the job you are in, say so.

This does not have to become a black mark on your work history. You could end up a stronger candidate who knows what type of company to look for and what questions to ask. Being a more determined, confident candidate can make you more attractive to a new employer.

Have you ever taken a job and right away found it to be a mismatch? How did you handle it?
