I recently heard from a reader who accepted a new job only to discover the job was not what they had been told it would be. He was wondering if he should resign from the new job or stay and try to make the best of things while he looked for a new one.

Sometimes, things don’t turn out the way you thought they would. If you find yourself in a position like this, my advice is to look at the factors that interested you in the job or the company in the first place. Was it the compensation, the fast-track career path, the leadership or products the company is offering that got your attention?

It is possible to focus on the positive factors of your situation. You can learn from this experience, and it will serve to make you a stronger job candidate as you learn to ask questions about factors important to you.

It helps to ask for a job description and slow down the process of making a decision until you have a realistic view of what the employer expects and how those expectations fit with your career goals.

Most job seekers describe their worst jobs as the best teachers, and while they may have been uncomfortable for a time, they never have forgotten the experience.

Before quitting, do a reality check to make sure you have given yourself enough time to settle into the position, learn the corporate culture and create meaningful connections within the company.
