Have you ever been in a job that you found boring because you weren’t being challenged? Almost everyone encounters boredom at some point in their career, and it also presents employers with a tough challenge as they seek to retain talented employees. When people become bored, their attitudes can suffer and they can become negative and subject to frustration, even if their job pays well.

The challenge to stay motivated is one employees must face and manage on their own. If you find yourself constantly longing for a new employer, ask yourself if you are giving your job your very best. It’s hard to give your employer 100% while you’re thinking about the greener pastures. You can always look for another job, but boredom does not necessarily mean the job you are in is a bad fit.

Take some time to think about what is causing your boredom. Is it a lack of energy or being overlooked for promotions, perhaps?

Once you’ve given it some thought, there are some things you can do to fight the boredom of your current job, including:

Learn something new. Take classes that are fun. They don’t have to be work-related. This is one of the best ways to get recharged and fight boredom.
Exercise is a great way to increase energy levels and be involved in activities outside of work.
Consider discussing your career goals with your boss. This may be helpful and demonstrate you are committed to being an asset to the company.
Take on different responsibilities. This has the added benefit of being seen as drive and a willingness to learn, which are positive characteristics.
Develop personal goals to increase your skills and value to your employer.
Get involved with your professional associations and increase your networking relationships. It could be that you are unaware of your value in the marketplace, and a reality check can help keep you motivated.
You can, of course, change jobs.
