When you’re applying for jobs, you may feel filling out an employer’s application is redundant. Why can’t you just fill in “see resume” and be done?

Completing applications is not the most enjoyable part of a job search, but it is necessary. Your resume will not take the place of an application. A resume presents your background, skills, abilities and education in a concise manner that will catch the reader’s interest.

An application is a policy-and-procedure tool to obtain specific information from a potential job candidate, and it will ask for such information as your social security number and professional or personal references. Be sure and to answer each question in an honest manner. Your background check needs to match your answers on your application. If it doesn’t, match, you probably won’t be getting a job offer.

When filling out an application, make sure any dates on your resume match the dates on your application. Write your answers clearly and watch for misspelled words. Above all, read the instructions. Take for example the company that stressed in fine print of the application that only blue ink was acceptable. The fine-print instructions were used to screen out candidates who did not read carefully. Don’t leave questions unanswered. If a question does not apply to you, write “not applicable.” Before you answer a single question, read through the entire application.

Ask the company representative for any special instructions, and clarify any questions or concerns you have. If the application asks why you have left previous jobs, be careful about using terms such as “terminated” or “fired.” A reorganization or downsizing is not the same thing as a termination or firing.

You may be asked about previous salaries. Employers use this question to gauge several aspects of your last position, including your level of responsibility and if you fall in the salary range being offered. Consider putting “open” or “negotiable,” or entering a salary range.

After completing the form go back and proofread for any question left blank. Look for neatness. There’s no doubt the appearance of your application will present an image to the employer.
