Of course, there are many reasons one person is promoted and another isn’t. Some things you can change; some things you can’t. You can look at your work style and skills, and address any weak spots. Here are three common reasons people are passed over for promotions and some things you can do if any of them sound familiar.
1. Just focusing on your job. You may win a gold star for consistency and reliability and never get a promotion if you only focus on your role. Employers look for people who demonstrate initiative and take the extra steps needed to get things done. If you see something that needs to be done, consider taking the steps to handle it without being told. If you’re not demonstrating initiative, you could be sending the impression you’re not ready to move up.
2. Uncomfortable with taking risks. Promotable employees realize that change brings opportunities, and they strive to develop knowledge. Stretching your comfort zone by attending professional events, getting additional training and meeting people who can add to your skills helps signal you are confident and willing to grow.
3. Not understanding the company’s goals. You discover opportunities by asking good questions and incorporating the company’s goals in your daily interactions. Being interested in helping the company succeed signals to management that you care enough to spend time studying what the company hopes to accomplish.
As you move ahead in your career, keep these three reasons in mind and make sure you’re sending the right messages regarding your promotability.
