While not every party you attend needs to have a job search agenda attached to it, it is helpful to keep in mind that networking should be a natural way of interacting with others. Most good job leads and business deals come from conversations in a relaxed atmosphere.

Parties are a great way to interact with others, and they’re a natural environment for networking. Networking is really about interaction, the give and take that make a memorable meeting.

Here are some quick tips to help you make the most of your holiday parties:

• Be positive even though this year may have been a difficult one for you personally. A positive attitude is attractive.

• Watch for nonverbal responses and listen for cues that tell you when to move on or change the subject.

• Stay out of the zone of only talking to one or two people. Include others by introducing them into your conversations.

• Keep in mind the “three foot rule“ and make it your goal to reach out to others you don’t know.

• If name tags are given, make sure yours is displayed where others can easily see it.

• Take plenty of business cards with you, and keep the ones you receive in a different pocket.

• Keep in mind the person you are meeting might need you to help introduce them to others. Strive to make people feel at ease.

• Start conversations by talking about what you have in common — one of the most obvious things would be attending the party. Ask questions to help create the conversation flow.

• Take the lead and introduce yourself. Waiting to be introduced can create awkwardness.

• Aim for a conversation that has a balance of social and business.

• Always follow up within a day or two after good conversations, especially if the person requested your resume.

• If you are uncomfortable meeting others, focus your energy on listening to them and not what you are thinking.

Who knows where your next job lead will come from in the meantime relax and be genuine with those you meet.
