I recently read this very good article about protecting your job through periods of change — especially during an uncertain economy.

I think the information is right on target. It highlights the importance of maintaining good relationship skills. What I agree with most was what the author stressed is the key ingredient — your attitude.

Change appears to be the common denominator in the workplace these days, and developing a positive attitude that you can maintain through stressful times will cause those around you to take notice.

Once someone has the perception that a person is negative, it’s hard to change, so it’s doubly important that you cultivate a positive attitude regardless of your work environment.

It’s easy to be positive when times are good and profits are up. When times are tough, and uncertainty overtakes your workplace, it’s harder to have a positive attitude. But that’s exactly what you need to protect your job.

While you can’t control the market, you can control your outlook during tough times. Your attitude affects every aspect of your employment, from the moment you are hired to the next transition.

Studies have shown that chemistry leaves a strong impression. While it is important to maintain your skill sets, never underestimate the power of getting along with others.

There are several steps you can take to help protect your job.

Stay flexible and willing to take on more responsibility, if that’s what is needed. Staying visible with other departments and demonstrating your value as a problem solver will help you when staffing decisions are being made.

Make contact with colleagues who are making the best of a stressful situation. Being isolated only compounds anxiety.

I would like to hear about ways you’ve been proactive in your changing workplace.
